WHAT IS A PLAYMAKER?

Mark Newman, former senior vice president of baseball operations for the New York Yankees:

What the term means to me is someone who takes talent and skill, and is able to use them in game situations. During my many years with the Yankees we signed and developed many outstanding players. We also signed several players who we thought were going to be outstanding and for some reason fell short of the potential we saw in them. This experience makes a person acutely aware of the gap between talent and performance. The bridge over that gap is all the cognitive skills that allow a player to go from being a prospect to a performer. That’s what distinguishes the playmaker from the one who aspires to be a playmaker.

Certainly, in everything there are degrees, but [a playmaker is] one that can translate talent into execution, make plays, as the term suggests, and that requires a level of skill development. Beyond that is this cognitive development: the ability to mentally and emotionally be tuned in to the environment and respond appropriately to it.
